The Long Road to Tolerance
During the end of April and first part of May, Guests on Call will be scheduling interviews on radio programs nationwide to talk about how Islam and the West can come to better cultural understanding.
In the confusion immediately following the VA Tech shootings, many Muslims were hoping that the shooter was not in fact a Muslim, as media had speculated. Since 9/11, many American Muslims have endured racial profiling and increased attacks against Islam in the media and in neighborhoods across America.
Muslims worldwide saw what could be considered religious torture, as well as physical and mental torture, in the Abu Ghraib photos. Muslims worldwide were outraged at the photos which showed that US military used taboos in the Islamic faith to further torture their Muslim prisoners.
Many American's views of Islam and many Muslims' views of Americans (who are not Muslim) are mutually negative. However, there is still hope and room for better understanding and tolerance.
Check out our talking points and web resources page. Help us think about how to carve out the path to common ground where we can foster religious tolerance, respect and freedom.
