Does Peace Have a Chance?
Starting May 10th, the Mainstream Media Project will be scheduling interviews nationwide about building peace in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our guests will discuss what peacebuilding is and what obstacles stand in the way of creating peace.
There are many guests from this media release who believe that if the U.S. commits to a timeline to pull troops out the area, peacebuilding can begin and urgent humanitarian needs can be met. Many believe that we must stop funding the war to begin building peace.
In Iraq, more than half of the Iraqi Parliament rejected the continuing occupation of their country this week for the first time. A majority of Americans favor a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan.
There are many practical steps towards peace. There is a campaign underway for a Department of Peace. Foreign Policy in Focus has released a Unified Security Budget, showing where money is going in the defense budget and how it could be redirected for peace. The Unified Security Budget also outlines wasteful spending, like $600 million on a fighter jet that has been shown to be defunct.
Check our "Tune it In" section for upcoming show dates and times. Please visit our "Web Resources" page to find more information online. And again, we post "Talking Points" so you can learn more about peacebuilding, including obstacles to peace and ideas for creating peace.
